WOODEN FLOORING

Wooden flooring is a tricky feature in designing a room. This can either make the look come together or just destroy the whole look. Best is to first now your purpose. Nothing should be added in the interior of the house without really knowing why as an answer . If it is something you have seen in other’s house ? Is it to hide the tiles ? Is it because you saw a pic of it ?

With a perspective of an interior designer, we sometimes use it for 1)warmth in the room, 2)make the room look larger or smaller and 3)add a design feature to a very basic room.

Any brand of wooden flooring is good. The life of wooden flooring is around 10 years ( by then you might just get too bored to still have it around ) They wear out at the high traffic areas but generally not in the residence. The wooden flooring also does not give you thermal shock when getting off the bed.. The dust etc is more near the entrance of the house . In the room the only place for scratches , can be near study table because of chair movements. The wooden flooring discourages shoes in the room and keeps the room away from any outside infection being carried in footwear.

Types of wooden flooring

The wooden flooring is of two types : A) Hardwood B) Laminate

The hardwood flooring is made of pure wooden pieces and this can be in small pieces put together in different patterns. These need grinding and polishing.

The Laminate flooring are the ones artificially made by MDF board and laminated by a film of vineer. These come prefinished and have the tongue and groove arrangement to fix. These are fixed quickly .

Generally the wooden flooring do not spoil with little amount of water for eg. a glass of water spill , wet clothes, after a bath wet feet. One has to be careful on the hardwood flooring as it takes stains and scratches easily.

The water or any liquid should not stay more than an hour or so . This will make few panels to swell and mis-shapen. In rainy season they do creek a little because of the excess moisture in the air.

Interior perspective

Now let me give you few tips to selecting the flooring for your room. In

Room 1. The flooring is dark as the room is huge with ample natural light. The dark colour flooring is complimenting the light walls .

Room 2. The floor is creating a visual partition/ divide and also breaks the monotony.

Room 3. The room is small so a light colour flooring gives the warmth needed and also keeps the room bright.

TIP OF THE DAY

When we go for pricing , then I like to select a middle pricing. I do not go very cheap as then one is not sure of the basic material used and when priced too high … you pay for the brand and not necessarily for the product. The Price starts from Rs 55/ sqft to Rs300/ sqft. I generally go for a price range from Rs95-120. The companies are plenty so to select is to read a little about the company and what it deals with. One should also check the specification of the different products offered in the market as welll as what different range of the product.

Please first know your purpose as then only it is best to select a suitable product. For example : If you are on ground floor and you want a wooden flooring then do wait for an year before you install it as then you will know the seepage or any water issue in the room.
